Jeremy Mason’s abstractions seem at first to be simple exercises in shape and color, but this simplicity is deceptive. Mason’s paintings reveal themselves over time to be masterful expressions of mood and layering, of a sensibility that knows when to pull back and when to let go. Strange plumes of color blend in and out of a mostly grey palette like chemical clouds against an urban landscape, or blurred graffiti on a concrete wall. Mason paints intuitively. Using acrylic on wood panels, he allows texture and color to play with each other organically.
Mason, whose background is in communications and finance, is a self-taught artist. He lives and works in Mid-Michigan and is one half of Craft & Mason Coffee Roasters.
